Oxford Ph.D. View

-

Oxford

" I'm looking forward to see what changes the Coup leaders have brought about.

Thailand has never been short on ruthless generals with a lust to rule. By my calculation since 1932 when clique of army officers overthrew the last absolute monarch, Thailand has suffered 18 coups.

I guess the Coup will be unpopular with the farmers and with the poor but popular with the people of Bangkok, who have long wanted Thaksin out. (I was certainly no great admirer of his corruption but liked his work with the poor and his attenpt to crack down on the terrorists in the South). But I have a great concern that Thailand 's young democracy once again is in the hands of the army.

Some argue that Thailand's generals did the right thing they removed Thaksin whose business dealings tarnished his government, and they have resolved a political stalemate that had paralyzed Thailand for all of this year.

But I wonder if by going outside the democratic system to save Thailand, the now ruling "old guard"the military leadership and its backers in the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy has done more harm than good.

For a start, they have shown an apparent indifference toward the majority of Thais, especially the rural population that still staunchly supports Thaksin. Their voices have been silenced by the refusal of the Council to hold a fresh ballot for at least a year.

Equally troubling is that the Council has bypassed or undermined democratic institutions such as parliament and the Constitutional Court, which renders judgment on issues such as the validity of elections.

The Council says fresh elections will be held in a year; that's too long to wait. It is only through a return to genuinely accountable, elected government that Thailand can have long-lasting stability and prosperity. A house full of mice eating at the foundations of Thailand's democracy is a health hazard to all."
